lately i seem to have been thinking about blind spots. kind of a spin on this sage auld quote:you are like people who stare at themselves in a mirror and forget what they look like as soon as they leave. JIMBOB KNOBBLY-KNEES McJOEY ch1v23/4 my own concern is more to do with looking in the mirror and actually managing to see what's reflected back at you, never mind remembering it. i refer to those tricky psychological denial mechanisms which prevent you from seeing yourself as you are, cos if u did, your ego couldn't handle it - in other words, the sizable conflict between crushing and humuliating reality and the "ego ideal", which is your own conception of who you should be, is avoided. in this way, you are able to deal with your own personality fault-lines in (more or less) manageable amounts.
I have a hunch, and the hunch is this: denial mechanisms band together and form blind spots. Those blimming incomprehensible blind spots obscure massive areas of your personality which, if you were aware of them at any time other than the occasions in which they are the major player in your decision making, you would find utterly distasteful and would struggle to even admit that they are ingrained into YOU. This has been bugging me for some time, seeing as according to this theory, I wouldn't know what my own blind spots are. But I don't want to be gullible or superstitious about it either (although paranoia is tolerable) .. |
